With the score leveled at 0-0 at half-time, Australia grew into the game as the first half went on and mounted several counterattacks, eventually getting the winning goal at 60 minutes when a through ball found Leckie in acres of space on the left to pull out a needed victory
In an unfortunate turn of events, Denmark did seem to get a brilliant chance to level the score when the referee awarded them a penalty for a foul on Kasper Dolberg with 10 minutes left on the clock. However, this decision was quickly overturned as the approach for the foul was ruled as an offside after the flag was raised, much to the disappointment and protests of the players and the crowd. This seemingly was the only promising attempt Denmark came to make in the entire game since the Australian combination of attack and defense was way too good for the Danish team to overcome. They rarely looked like scoring.
The end of the stipulated 90 minutes was followed by 6 minutes of added time that didn’t really help Denmark in any way as the Aussies kept it tight, not letting any opportunity slip to the Dans. All they needed to do was just defend and maintain their lead, which they did perfectly. The referee blew the final whistle to give Australia a conclusive 1-0 victory over Denmark in Match 37 at the Al Janoub Stadium.
Mathew Leckie’s fantastic solo goal in the 60th minute was seemingly the only shining highlight of the match. The buildup to the goal saw Leckie superbly dribble the ball, confusing and sending goalkeeper Maehle the wrong way twice. He then seized the opportunity and fire it through his legs and into the bottom right corner for the match-winning goal, which gave Australia a crucial win. This victory has ensured that Australia will now join France in the Round of 16.
As the tournament is halfway through, the buildup to the finals is getting more exciting, with some teams getting knocked out, while others qualify for the Top 16.
