FIFA World Cup 2022 | Match 40 | Mexico Beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 in a Must Win Encounter but Failed to Reach Top 16 as Poland Whisk ahead on Goal Difference

Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia in the Match 40 of FIFA 2022, but still saw themselves crashing out of the tournament as Poland and Argentina progressed into the top 16. The 2-1 victory against Team Saudi was not enough for the Mexicans to qualify for the round of 16 as Poland, despite losing their match against Argentina, narrowly moved ahead of Mexico on goal difference to take the second spot in the Group C ranks and a spot in the top 16.

The thrilling Group C match saw both teams fighting for their lives, where Henry Martin and Luis Chavez scored the two winning goals for Mexico as they defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1. The first half of the match was evenly matched as both teams made equal attempts to take the lead. Alexis Vega’s diving header in the 3rd minute of the match was brilliantly saved by Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais. The first half eventually ended goalless for both the teams, however, two Mexican goals in quick succession saw El Tri take a 2-0 lead early in the second half.

The second half commenced with Mexico taking the attack on the Saudi side with early attempts of opening the score. In the 47th minute, Henry Martin shot the ball into the nets after a sublime Mexican corner that swung into the Saudi Arabian box. This turned out to be Mexico’s first goal of the FIFA 2022. Just 5 minutes later, as Saudu Arabia was still reeling with the damage, Mexico are awarded a free-kick just outside the box. Luis Chavez decided to take the strike and ended up sending a scintillating shot directly into the goal past the goalie from nearly 30 yards out. At 63 minutes, Mexico were 2-0 up against Saudi Arabia and looked strong top score a third goal to seal a spot in the top 16.

By this time, in a simultaneous Group C match, Argentina were learning Poland 2-0, which meant that Mexico were at that point tied with Poland on goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head points, but the Polish team had a better fair play record – fewer yellow cards. The only things that Mexico needed to make it to the last 16 was to score one more goal, or if Argentina could clinch a 3-0 win over Poland, as even that would have been enough for Mexico to qualify. Poland somehow held their ground and their match ended with Argentina winning 2-0. This left Mexico with no option but to score just once more and also not let Saudi score. But, Salem Aldawsari scored in the 95th minute taking the score to 2-1, dashing all Mexican hopes of making it to the knockouts.

This was a victory that no Mexican celebrated as their team dramatically crashed out of the World Cup despite a spirited 2-1 victory, as Poland progressed into the knockout phase as Group C runners-up by virtue of a superior goal difference. Mexico has previously advanced from the group stages in each of its last eight appearances at the World Cup, making this the first time since 1978 that they have been eliminated in the group stages.
