After an interesting opening match between the hosts Qatar and Ecuador, which saw the latter emerge victorious, the stage was set for the second and one of the most anticipated group matches of the tournament where the veterans England take on Iran. They both have a tough road ahead of them, so they want to make it worthwhile, especially England, who valiantly made it till the semi’s in the 2018 World Cup, will be looking to clinch the gold this time.
The preparations for England’s first match of the 2022 edition against the underdogs Iran was a promising challenge for Harry Kane’s team. With the blow of the first whistle, the Englishmen quickly gained ball possession and maintained their dominance with swift and classy passes through the gaps, nearly penetrating the Iranian defense multiple times.
With Iran struggling to keep the ball at their feet, tragedy struck as Bellingham sent one past the goalie in the 35th minutes to give England their first goal of the match and this tournament. With team Iran reeling with the sudden blow, Arsenal star Bukayo Saka scored the second goal for England in the 43rd minute followed by Raheem Sterling with an unexpected shocker during extra time (46 minutes). Iran made 3 back to back substitutions in the 46th minute as the referee blew his whistle. The scorecard at half time reads 3-0 in England’s favor.
As the second half kicked off with both sides swapping sides, the Iranians sought some redemption with a couple of missed opportunities at the goal. It was only during the 62nd minute that Saka scored his second goal of the match to give his side 4-0 lead, dashing all hopes for Iran to fight back and win.
It was only in the 65th minute that Irani striker Mehdi Taremi restored parity for Iran, scoring the first goal for the team. Marcus Rashford scored England’s fifth goal in the 71st minute after stepping off the bench followed by a sixth one by Jack Grealish in the 90th minute.
The match went into an extended extra time of 14 minutes where Mehdi ended up scoring his second goal through a penalty, to bring the score to 6-2, which just wasn’t enough as the referee’s whistle called for the end.
A completely dominant performance by the lion’s veterans Saka, Bellingham, Sterling, Rashford, and contributions from substitutes Grealish and Marcus Rashford ensured they handed Iran a thrashing defeat in the second match of FIFA 2022.
What Iran did wrong was they were too loose with the ball, rushing to score early, slipping and allowing England to take charge and never look back. In all fairness, this turned out to be just another warm up match for the Lions.
