Uruguay has never been an easy team to beat as they are one of the most celebrated and respected football teams in the international circuit and 2 time world champions, winning the inaugural World cup in 1950. So, when South Korea were put up to play against them, it was a tough challenge. Match 14 of FIFA 2022 saw the former world champions Uruguay take on a young and upcoming Korean Republic team at the Education City Stadium.
The match begins with both teams battling for early possession and finding a scoring opportunity. 7 minutes into the first half, South Korea earned the first corner of the match, which was taken by Captain Son Heung-min who sported a face mask due to a facial injury sustained before the match. He shoots a sweet curl into the Uruguayan D, which is cleared away by forward Nunez after a slight wobble by the Uruguayan defenders.
About 15 minutes into the first half, Federico Valverde strikes the first potential scoring shot of the match at the Korean goal. The Real Madrid star was putting the South Korean team on notice as he spearheaded the midfield of his team here at Education City. However, against all odds, South Korea have done great to restrain Uruguay from scoring, if not score one themselves. They have lead Uruguay in terms of ball possession in the first 20 minutes of the first half.
36 minutes down, Hwang Ui-jo’s attempts a stunning shot from 8 yards off the Uruguayan goal which just goes over the bar. South Korea’s first golden opportunity to score. The South American giants skipped a heartbeat as Ui-Jo narrowly missed the target. A few more scoring opportunities including a bullet header by veteran defender Diego Godin which just hit the post. The Koreans tried to convert some well crafted scoring opportunities, which were all thwarted by the Uruguayan defense as the first half ended without a single goal being scored.
The second half begins with a series of dominant moves by Uruguay as the Koreans do well to avert disaster. A little over 50 mintues, Son Heung-min takes a corner which is fisted away by Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. At 65 minutes, Nunez made a frantic run towards the goal, trying to go solo instead of assisting Suarez who is then replaced by Edinson Cavani. Another potential chance wasted.
Nunez made a decent attempt at scoring when he curled a right-footed strike from outside the box at 83 minutes after an assist from Cavani, but it missed. Uruguay maintained maximum ball possession in the second half, trying to create multiple scoring opportunities, but unable to execute. 8 more minutes are added as extra time, allowing both teams to score the decisive goal and yield an outcome. However, that doesn;t happen as the referee signals the end of the match. South Korea have done exceptionally well to hold the former world champions to a draw. The match ended goalless!
