Match 19 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 saw Netherlands take on Ecuador in a match to see who would win to have a stronger chance to make it to the knockout stages. Both teams were placed comfortably in the points table, having won their opening matches, so a win here would have been a good proposition for either side. However, that didn’t happen as both sides fought to a 1-1 draw at the Khalifa International Stadium.

The match started with Netherlands kicking off and maintaining good ball possession for the first few minutes. An early disaster struck Ecuador when Cody Gakpo scored a quick goal to give Netherlands an early lead just 6 minutes into the first half. Ecuador are taken aback by the unexpected early blow as the Dutch continue with the dominance. Ecuador makes their first attempt to score in the 24 th minute when M. Caicedo takes a shot but narrowly misses the target.

Ecuador have now shifted gears as they create several opportunities to score, creating pressure on the Dutch side. Ennar Valencia shoots at the goal at 32 minutes, but is saved by the goalie, giving his team a corner. The South Americans keep dominating ball possession throughout the remainder of the first half. 40 minutes in, Valencia drills a volley frmo a corner at the Dutch goal which is deflected in from the post and Ecuador begin to celebrate the much needed equalizer.

However, the linesman raises his flag to signal an offside which is reviewed by VAR, confirming the offside. The goal is disallowed much to the dissatisfaction and protests frm the Ecuador team members as the referee orders the match to continue. 5 minutes of extra time added sees Valencia trying to score again, but misses. Timber (Netherlands) also makes an attempt but fails as the referee calls for the end of the first half with Netherland leading Ecuador 1-0.

The match resumes with the second half with Ecuador taking charge, seemingly still pissed with what happened in the closing minutes of the first half. Just 4 minutes into the second half, Ennar Valencia finally scored a legit goal in the 49th minute to level the score 1-1 for Ecuador. In retaliation, Netherlands makes two promising attempts to double the lead. The first shot gets deflected away by Van Dijk and the second one hits the woodwork. 65 minutes up, and the scores are still leveled at 1-1.

The competition is now going back and forth with both teams making desperate attempts to take a match winning lead as the game gradually nears the end. 75 minutes in, Gakpo charges into the Ecuador box and tryes to chip the ball over the incoming goalkeeper, but misses the goal as the linesman simultaneously raises the flag to signal an offside as well. That was a close call for the Netherlands.

80 minutes gone, Netherlands are now getting restless and start losing the ball to Ecuador as the latter’s frequent attacks traps the Dutch in a cycle of defenses. They defend well, but again give it away cheaply and have to defend the counter. At 90 minutes, Valencia is taken off the field after a potential injury, and is replaced by Kevin Rodriguez. 6 minutes of extra time added, but the result still remains the same as both teams fight to a 1-1 draw.

Both teams are now in pole position to reach the last 16, which ends host nation Qatar’s chances of qualifying into the knockout stages as they were hoping Netherlands to lose this match.
