In match 21 of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022, Australia beat Tunisia 1-0, thus clincing their first World Cup win in 12 years at the Al Janoub Stadium, allowing them to currently move up the ranks to second behind the defending champions France in Group D. Australian Striker Mitchell Duke scored the winning goal midway through the first half with a perfectly timed header that sent the ball into the nets to give Australia the lead AND EVENTUALLY THE WIN.

The match kicked off with the Autralians adopting an attacking game play, trying to put early pressure on the Tunisians. As the first couple of minutes pass by, the Australia team throws several attacks from the left plank, but  are unable to convert. Although, they have been relentless in their approach so far in the match. It takes roughly 20 minutes for the first promising goal attempt by Tunisia, who fail to shoot the ball in after a superb cross into the box.

The 23rd minute of the game brought us the first goal of the match, as Australia broke the deadlock with Mitchell Duke heading a stunner past the goalie Aymen Dahmen. The goal came as a result of a sublime cross, as Duke used the pace of the ball and deflected it into the far post. Australia took a much needed 1-0 lead. Nearing the end of the first half, at around 41 minutes, a through ball into the box allows McGree to slide in and make contact, but Talbi gets in the way to clear the ball away. Tunisia got a really close scoring opportunity a minute on, when Drager got the ball inside the box for Tunisia. He pulls the shot, but the Australian defenders get in his way to execute an excellent save.

Another minute later, we get to see another sloppy piece of defending from the Tunisians as they failed to clear the ball when it bounced inside their box. Karacic (Autralia) sprinted in to make an attempt to score, but failed to execute his shot, sending it the other way. With 5 minutes added as extra time, the Australians managed to get a corner, which curled in only for the Tunisian defenders to put it away. In the final minute of the half, Tunisia came deadly close to scoring the equalizers when Youssef Msakni made his way through and attempted to curl the ball past the keeper with no defender around, but the ball narrowly went past the post. The Referee blows his whistle, with the first half ending 1-0 in favor of the Autralians.

The second half commences and Tunisia have suddenly entered attack mode, dominating ball possession and managing to get two corners and a freekick as well in the opening minutes. A promising start to the second half so far. The Australians also get a few chances to double their lead, as Goodwin collected the ball to put in a low cross through the face of the goalpost as his teammate slid in to push the ball into the nets but failed to make contact.

The fight goes back and forth between both teams, with Tunisia desperately trying to score an equalizer and Australia playing it safe and maintaining the lead, only looking to score when there is potential. This goes on throughout the second half, but it all ends with the referee’s whistle, who calls for the end after 7 minutes of extra time. Australia managed to pull off a much needed win to increase their chances of making the knockout stages.
