In Match 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2022, Portugal faced off against former two-time world champions Uruguay at the Lusail Stadium which saw the latter go down 2-0 after two goals from Bruno Fernandes ensured Portugal qualify for the Round of 16.

As the match begins with the referee’s whistle, both teams tussle to gain ball possession and create early scoring opportunities. Portugal has been throwing a flurry of attacks on the Uruguayan goal in the first half. 18 minutes into the first half, Following a shoddy challenge by Vecino on Mendes, Portugal was awarded a free kick just outside the box. 30 minutes in, Mathias Olivera tries to create an opportunity for Uruguay as he sends a cross into the Portuguese box but fails to find someone to send it in. A couple of minutes later, Matias Vecino puts Rodrigo Bentancur through in the center circle and he surges right through the middle, dribbling brilliantly past three Portuguese players on the edge of the box. He takes a valiant shot at the Portuguese goal but ends up shooting straight at goalkeeper Costa. The first half ends with a last-minute effort by striker Bentancur who world a fantastic solo dribble past the Portugal defense but misses a great chance as his shot goes straight at the Portuguese goalkeeper. Both teams stand goalless with the match halfway through.

As the second half gets underway, both teams begin to fight for taking an early lead. 55 minutes into the match, Bruno Fernandes scored the first goal for his team as Portugal opened their lead against Uruguay. Bruno sends in a cross from the left-side edge of Uruguay’s box that goes over Ronaldo who rises above two Uruguayan defenders, but is unable to make contact as the ball surges past the goalkeeper into the goal!

After 82 minutes of play, Portugal made 3 key replacements as Ruben Dias Ramos came in for Ronaldo and Nunes replaced Felix. Meanwhile, Carvalho makes way for Palhinha. 89 minutes into the match, the referee slaps Ramos with a yellow card for dissent as he keeps on protesting over a possible handball by Gimenez. 9 minutes are added as extra time. Uruguay is now pushing hard to make something happen.

3 minutes into the final extra time, Portugal gets a penalty after the referee checks on a potential handball by Gimenez, which is confirmed by the VAR. Bruno Fernandes walks in for the shot. He does a trademark stutter in front of the ball, followed by his trademark hop, and then shoots it down the left, beating the goalkeeper who dives the wrong way. Just minutes away from the final whistle, Brazil has taken an indisputable 2-0 lead over Uruguay.

Portugal overcame Uruguay 2-0 to advance to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 thanks to two goals from Bruno Fernandes. His cross for Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal its first lead in the 54th minute. He then scored a penalty in overtime.
