The first half got off to a strong start for the USA, who dominated the opening minutes and spent the first five minutes playing in and around Iran’s penalty area. Tim Weah scored the USA’s second goal in the final eight minutes of the first half to give his team the lead. Unfortunately for the Americans, the goal was determined to be offside. The goal was ruled to be illegal, so the USA went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

Iran made multiple attempts in the second half to seize control, create scoring opportunities, and tie the game with the Americans. The outstanding insulating qualities of the American defense lineup, however, prevented the Iranians from putting the ball into the goal.

Josh Sargent had to be removed after falling awkwardly in the 84th minute following a hard tackle by Hossein Kanani. Throughout the game, Sargent had a significant impact, spearheading the American attack on multiple occasions. A yellow card was given to Kanani for the assault on Sargent. Iran had a promising corner-kick opportunity as the game went on, but the team was unable to capitalize on it.

After 90 minutes of regulation play, Iran launched a barrage of attacks on the American goal in an apparent effort to tie the game. Pouraliganji and Mehdi’s attempts were all unsuccessful because the USA did a good job of keeping them from tying the score. In the 96th minute, Jalali received a yellow card, and the referee quickly blew the whistle to finish the game. Iran was defeated by the USA 1-0 to advance to the elimination rounds.
