In the 4th match of the FIFA World Cup 2022, USA faced off against Wales in the Group B fixture at the Al Rayyan Stadium. While Wales made their first-ever World Cup appearance since their maiden run in 1958. USA made a return after missing out on Russia 2018.

As the match commenced, both teams managed almost equal possession of the ball and throughout the first half of the match, the action went back and forth as both teams traded shots at one another’s goals until Christian Pulisic assisted Timothy Weah in the 36th minute to score the first goal of the match and give USA the lead in the first-half. Soon the referee blew the whistle, signaling the end of the first half after 4 minutes of extra time. USA lead 1-0

The action continued into the second half as USA maintained their dominance with the ball with swift and accurate passes through the gaps, creating pressure on the opposition. Some high tension moments unfolded in the 64th minute when USA almost scored through a beautifully crafted free kick by Wilson from the right flank. The ball swung into Gareth Bale, who maneuvered the ball skillfully, creating all sorts of trouble as his well-directed header was perfectly stopped by a reaction save by Turner to nudge the ball over the crossbar.

Soon after, there were three back to back substitutions for USA as Acosta replaced Musah, Yedlin replaced Dest and Wright came in place of Sargent.

Wales under pressure, held their nerves and finally found an opportunity to equalize as Captain Gareth Bale converted a penalty in the 82nd-minute. 81 minutes into the match, Zimmerman tried to tackle Bales inside USA’s box, but ended up kneeing him down. The referee slaps him a yellow card and gifted Wales a much needed penalty.

Gareth Bale powered a penalty into the top-right corner to fetch a much needed goal for Wales to level the score as the match almost approached the final minutes. USA goalie Turner stretched as far as he could but only managed to get a fingertip to the ball, as it went past him for the equalizer to allow Wales hold USA to a possible 1-1 draw.

The match now went into extra time as the referee signals 11 more minutes of play. Some high octane play followed as both teams desperately tried to get that one goal that could change the outcome of the game. The closest chance came in the 3rd minute of extra time when Wales got a free kick opportunity but fail to convert it into a point as the referee blew the whistle to signal full-time as soon as the ball missed the nets.
