Where the entire workd was rooting for Argentina to grab an easy win over the underdogs, it was the Saudi boys that stunned the entire world as they probably staged one of the biggest upsets in FIFA World Cup history by beating the Copa America Champs 1-2 in a stunning upset.
When the first half commenced, Argentina began with a dominant start, keeping the ball to themselves and rotating possession with frequent well-crafted passes. Just 10 minutes into the first half, a foul by Kanno (Saudi Arabia) follwedw by a review allowed the Argentinians to get a penalty opportunity, and what better than the little master himself taking the shot. Lionel Messi wasted no time, as he sent the ball past the Saudi goalie with ease, giving Argentina the first goal of the match.
A series of promsising opportunities for Messi and Lautaro Martinez got wasted as they were called offsides by the line referee. The first half further continued with Saudi Arabia had a few wasted attempts at the goal as the referee called for the end of the half with the scorecard reading 1-0 in Argentina’s favor. It took the Saudi stars just five minutes of sheer brilliance in the second half to take a shocking lead over the experienced Argentinians lead by the vereran Messi, leaving the men in blue in completely disarry by the sudden assault. Post 90 minutes, Argentina tried to utilize the 14 minutes extra time to fight back on multiple occasions, but unfortunately none of the shots hit the target and the referee ultimately called for the final whistle, putting a full stop to a fairy tale written by Saudi Arabia.
