After a thrilling day encounter on day 2 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 that saw England score a thumping 6-2 victory over Iran, we come to the second match of the day where Senegal took on The Netherlands at the Thumama Stadium. Senegal who gave their career best performance during the 2002 world cup, reaching the quarter finals, The Netherlands gave their best shot in the 2010 edition when they clashed with Spain in the tournament finals, missing out on the gold.

As the referee signaled the start of the first half, Senegal kicked things off in attack mode. Just 1 minute into the match, B. Dia striked at the Dutch goal, missing the net by just some margin. This was followed by a corner kick which was driven away by the Dutch defense. The Neds quickly tried fighting back as Vincent Janssen attempted a goal for his side in the 4th minute. The Netherlands, known for their physical gameplay committed a few fouls, until Ismaila tried a missed shot for Senegal in the 9th minute followed by another effort by N. Mendy in the 13th minute. making it clear that Senegal is not to be taken lightly.

Janssen and Blind also made attempts to score for The Neds, but they didn’t convert. The first half kept swinging to and fro with both sides making equal efforts to open the scorecard. For Senegal, Ismaila Grepin and Gana missed their shots at the goal, same was the case with Janssen, Virgil and Gakpo for The Netherlands. The first half ended after an additional time of 3 minutes, with the scorecard evenly matched at 0-0, both sides failing to score.

The second half began with a couple of fouls by Senegal, but nothing that harmed either side. The match continued with back and forth fouls and scoring attempts by both teams, till the 56th minute that saw the first yellow card of the match slapped on De Ligt of The Netherlands. The 62nd minute saw two substitutions where Janssen of The Neds was replaced by Memphis Depay and  Ismail Jakobs of Senegal being replaced by Abdou Diallo.

Senegal were seemingly the stronger team after the break, having had more opportunities to score as compared to the Dutch, with their goalkeeper Noppert standing their ground against the constant Senegal attack. The first goal of the match ultimately came during the 84th minute when Cody Gakpo scored the first and much needed foal for The Netherlands. The Dutch fans erupted in joy as the evenly matched bout could finally see an outcome in their favor.

With the match still not over, the second half stretched into 11 minutes of extra time. 9 minutes into the extra time, the Dutch get their second goal as substitute Davy Klaassen nets one for the team, shattering all hopes of Senegal to making a tie or scoring a miraculous win.
